As a leap year day, 29 February is extra special. In 2024, we’re also marking 30 years since Save the Rhino was established – and so the beginning of our 30th year! I’d like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to you for being an integral part of our rhino journey.
Reflecting on rhino conservation over the last three decades, we have witnessed some important successes. Rhino populations in Africa have more than doubled, from fewer than 10,000 in the early ’90s to 23,290 by the end of 2022. Greater one-horned rhinos have increased to 4,018 and been successfully reintroduced to former habitats in India and Nepal, and although remaining under serious threat, the recent births of Sumatran and Javan rhinos in Indonesia, offer much-needed hope for these special species.
From our humble beginnings in 1994, our dedication to rhino conservation remains unwavering. You, as part of our incredible community of donors, members, partners and fundraisers (with a special mention to everyone out there who has bravely worn a rhino costume!) have been instrumental in this journey. We are very grateful for your support.
Your contributions, in all their forms, have played a vital role in our conservation efforts, making a tangible difference in the lives of rhinos, their ecosystems and the people associated with them.
Despite the gains achieved to date, our work is far from over. As we saw earlier this week, the trafficking of rhino horn by transnational organised crime networks remains an urgent and persistent threat, as does the parallel need to ensure sufficient secure space for the world’s rhino populations. These pressures are compounded by the increasing impacts of the climate and biodiversity crises.
There are several ways that you can help us achieve our vision of seeing the world’s five rhino species thrive in the wild:
- Become a Member: Celebrate our birthday by joining other passionate individuals in our close family, all dedicated to protecting rhinos for future generations
- Donate: Give a birthday gift to enable us to fund crucial conservation projects and initiatives
- Leave a legacy: Consider including Save the Rhino in your will, to ensure a lasting impact on rhino conservation
Together, we can continue to support our partners to ensure a brighter future for rhinos. Here’s to many more successes in the next 30 years!
Thank you.
